1. Several new
pictures were added to the Action
Photos page. Thanks to everyone who submitted these great shots
of their Aerostar kites. Keep 'em coming! 2.
Thanks to Michal Drzewinski for the cool photo on the Home
Page! With some slick digital photo editing, Michal constructed
a Christmas tree from his ZeroStar SUL. 3.
I wanted to wish everyone a wonderful Holiday season! Several of you
may just find a surprise Aerostar kite under your tree come Christmas
morning (hint, hint). |

1. An AllStar
UL Review written by Ben Liptak is now available on-line. Some
video links are also shown at the bottom of that page. It should be
noted that all Aerostar reviews were written by individuals who are not
sponsored or affiliated with the company in any form. (Only when an owner
lays down their hard earned cash to buy a kite will you get an unbiased
and honest review!) Thanks to the reviewers for granting permission
to have their articles linked to from this site. 2.
The Spica Pro Page was updated for
the new 10 Panel EX version. This will be the '03 edition of this
popular Aerostar kite. 3.
Been craving a full-size SUL? Check out the ZeroStar available on
the Finished Kites
page! This would also make a great Christmas present for that
special kite flyer in your life. (Note: Due to the volume of holiday
orders, this will be the only finished kite available before Jan '03.) |

1. Been quite busy designing and
testing some 2003 Aerostar kites. On the Home
Page are photos of the first production Spica Pro EX and AllStar
UL. More details and photos will be added soon. If you plan to
order one (or both!) of these great kites, check out the on-line colorizer
applets for the '03 Spica
and AllStar.
Shown below are some of the new precision templates which helped to
make these kites possible.

2.
The Products page has been
updated to reflect the Aerostar line-up for 2003. In addition,
the ZeroStar SUL page received
a face-lift with some new photos and information. Hope to get the
page for the new AllStar UL completed and uploaded in the near future. 3.
A dedicated page with specs and pricing for the new '03 AllStar
UL is now here! Thanks to Ben Liptak (owner of AllStar #01) for
the action shot. |

1. The UL version of the ZeroStar will become a separate
new model. Based on the SUL platform that has received such rave
reviews, the UL version has
altered airframe dimensions and bridle geometries that have been optimized
for the increased mass and wind range. Also, the sail has additional
reinforcements to
handle the added stress. Finally, this kite will have its own distinctive
appliqué based on the new Aerostar logo designed by John
Chilese.
The templates for
the new appliqué and sail reinforcements are currently being fabricated
and should be completed in about a week. The new UL will utilize the
awesome Easton Pro-Comp 14 airframe (you Spica Pro owners can attest to
how stiff, light and durable these sticks are!). Final pricing
has yet to be set. While the Easton airframe is slightly less
expensive than the wrapped & tapered 2PTs used in the ZeroStar, the
more intricate appliqué and added reinforcing will be more labor
intensive. So, the price should fall close to it's sibling SUL
version.
Given the UL's wide
usable wind range and the ability to perform both precision and trick
flying, the kite will probably be called the AllStar (names are still
being debated!). Below is a depiction of
this new kite. If you would like to start dreaming of
acquiring your own, CLICK HERE to check out the on-line
colorizer. (A dedicated page listing specifications and
pricing for this new kite will be uploaded soon.)

2. Instructions were added to the Tuning
Tips page for making a 'V' shaped trick line for the Spica Pro.
This enhanced design is easier to fabricate than the 'W' shaped style plus
has less drag. In flight tests, this 'V' profile has proven to have
excellent performance. Not only does it effectively prevent spine wraps (a major
problem with long dynamic 'Turbo' bridles), but Lazy Susans are just as repeatable.
Although this 'V'
trick line does not prevent line wraps at the wingtips, the Spica
Pro is by no means a "tip wrap machine" so this shouldn't be a problem.
If after reading the instructions you still have questions or need
supplies, please contact Aerostar. And, just like the Pulsar and
ZeroStar, all production Spica Pros will now come standard with the new Dynamic 'V' Trick
Line.
3. The Dark
Grey (a.k.a. Charcoal) color on all the Aerostar on-line colorizer applets has been
modified. The new 'virtual' hue is now lighter and a much closer match to how
this shade of PC-31 sailcloth appears when in the sky. Incidentally,
Dark Grey has surpassed Fl. Yellow as the overall most popular color
ordered by Aerostar customers. Makes sense since it goes well with any of
the other 11 colors and has a brilliant shimmer when backlit by the
sun. Also, 'Stealth' patterns that combine Dark Grey and Black
are getting quite popular!
4. Some more news
to relay concerning the new ZeroStar based UL. Regarding the name,
it will officially be called the AllStar. In addition, the new
templates have been completed so this kite is now ready for
production! After AllStar #01 is finished, some photos and a
dedicated page will be uploaded. For now, here is a teaser detail
shot of the AllStar appliqué:

1. A big thanks
goes out to Trung Tran of the DAKO
Kite Club for creating the new Aerostar Flash Intro. Trung, who
also made the original intro, was kind enough to assist me a second
time. This updated animation now features the new logo designed by
John Chilese plus the latest Aerostar kite designs, the Stryke Fighter and
ZeroStar SUL. |
|
1. All Spica Pros
will now come standard with a 'W' shaped dynamic trick line. Like
the original straight trick line, this design still offers the same great
anti-snag capabilities and trailing edge sail protection. In
addition, the pair of indents in this new setup help cradle the bridle
during technical moves. In turn, this makes maneuvers like the Lazy
Susan and 1/2 Lazy Susan to Fade much easier (examples of these tricks are
on the Video Page). A big thanks goes out to Joe Aull for his testing feedback and
assistance in optimizing the geometry of this trick line!
2. A second
ZeroStar
SUL Review is now on-line for those of you interested in learning
more about this kite. This review was written by Tom Michaud who
recently took delivery of his new Z* SUL. Thanks for taking the time
to do the review Tom! (The light wind days of summer aren't so bad
anymore, right?)
3. Additional
instructions were added to the on-line colorizer pages for the Stryke,
the Spica Pro and the ZeroStar.
Specifically, the procedure for submitting your sail colors directly to
Aerostar Sportkites when placing an order are explained. Thanks to
Frank Novak for the computer tips! |

1. To supplement
the SUL version of the ZeroStar, an UL version will be introduced
soon. Here are some preliminary specs: Air
Frame: Easton Pro Comp 14 Hi-Mod
Weight: 8 ozs (227 grams)
Wingspan: 7'1"
Wind Range (Estimated): 2 - 16 mph If
done properly, introducing a new version of an existing sportkite involves
more than just throwing in different spars. Prior to flight testing
an UL model, many hours were spent analyzing the weight distributions and sail geometry variations between the two airframes. The photo below
shows the leading edge camber of a prototype UL being examined for any discrepancies
with an outline from the production SUL.
Initial
tests of the prototype UL proved quite promising, but also revealed some
tuning was needed to further optimize performance. Due to the
increased mass, there was now a tendency for some oversteer when exiting
spins. Further, the stiffer frame made the kite feel overly
sensitive to inputs. The
goal with the ZeroStar line is to make an all around kite with high trick
and precision capabilities. Therefore, efforts were made to
"detune" the UL slightly and offer the same smooth feel present
in the SUL. In
experimenting with different aspect ratios, a slightly reduced setting toned down the kite for better tracking and stall stability.
Also, a revised setting on the Dynamic bridle had positive effects.
Finally, various Active bridles are being tested as well. Doing
things right takes time, but the results will be worth it. Watch for
the ZeroStar UL - it's going to be hot! 2.
A new instructional article was added to the Flying Tips
page. If you've been wanting to learn the Coin Toss, be sure to
check this out! |
|
1. Some new Video
Clips were added featuring the ZeroStar SUL. Once again, thanks
to Ben Liptak for submitting these. Love that Axel
Launch! 2.
Due to the volume of custom orders, there just hasn't been time to build
up an inventory for the Finished Kites page. But, did manage to add
one of the popular Stryke fighters (hey, it's a start!)
Interested? CLICK
HERE to view the kite. This beauty is ready to ship today
- first come, first serve! 3.
New additions were added to Video
Clips page (thanks Ben - great flying!). Also, new images have
been uploaded to both the Photos
and Customer Photos
pages. Thanks to John Chilese for the action shots of the ZeroStar
SUL in front of the Golden Gate bridge - really nice! |
| 1. Information of how to extract
maximum lift from your ZeroStar SUL was added to the Tuning
Tips page.
2. A ZeroStar
SUL Review was recently written by Ben Liptak. This detailed
article should prove beneficial if you are considering ordering one of
these kites and crave additional information. 3.
An Aerostar Logo page was just
uploaded. Please take a quick look at the various concepts and
submit your vote for the top two picks. Around mid-April, the votes
will be compiled and a winning logo selected. 4.
Some new Tri-Panel photos were added to the Stryke
Fighter page. The additions include a Duo (two color) version
done in a very crisp appearing Red & Black. Also included is a
Rainbow version with the stripes oriented vertically. The seven sail
variations pictured, along with the on-line colorizer, will be of great
assistance when selecting that perfect custom Stryke Fighter for
you! 5.
Voting for the new Aerostar logo is closed and the results have been
tallied. A couple hundred votes were received and a big thanks goes
out to the on-line kiting community for taking the time to pick your
favorites. So, without further ado, the top three finishers in
reverse order were: Third
Place - #1 (Designed by Paul Shirey)
Second Place - #4 (Designed by Michal Drzewinski)
First Place - #3 (Designed by John Chilese) John
and I will be working together on putting the finishing touches on this
distinctive logo. The plan is to use the patriotic Red/White/Blue
scheme. Still have to finalize the font style and logo orientation,
but the end result will be close to what is shown below. Can't wait
to see this on a hat or shirt! |

6. Nino from Greece
recently sent some wonderful gifts including Aerostar T-shirts and custom
wooden line winders. The winders were completely made by hand and
the photo below doesn't even begin to do them justice. Thanks for
your generosity Nino - your custom Spica Pro and ZeroStar SUL kites are on
the way! |
|
1. A Video
Clips page has just been started and is still very much in the
developmental phase. The ultimate goal is to feature video segments
demonstrating a wide variety of tricks and to showcase the performance
potential of Aerostar kites. Since many people still have dial-up
internet connections, the plan
is to keep the videos short in duration for easy downloading. A big
thanks go out to Ben Liptak and Tom Lowther for creating the first three
videos! Of course, submissions from other Aerostar owners would be
welcomed and appreciated.
|
1. The Tuning Tips page
was updated to include some pointers on spreader installation. Ok, I
know that sounds (yawn) boring, but doing it wrong can lead to performance
problems and damage to your kite. So check it out!
2. Some action
shots of the first
ZeroStar SUL shipped to Europe have been added to the Photos
page. Thanks to Michal from Poland for sending these and glad you
are enjoying the kite!
3. A new page is
being started for Customer
Photos. It would be great to receive a picture from all of you
holding your Aerostar kites. So grab that digital camera or scanner
and send me those pics!
4. A Finished
Kites page was added for those flyers in a hurry for their new
kite. Although you don't get to choose the colors, these kites will
be available for immediate shipment. Still quite busy with custom
orders, so not sure how successful I'll be in adding kites to this
page. But for now, the page opens with a custom Rainbow Fade
Tri-Panel Stryke Fighter.

| 1. Happy New Year! Thanks
to AERIALIS-DOT-COM
for the Kite Site Award - what a great way to kick off 2002! By the way, great job on
the site, Sven, and keep up the good work!

2. For '02, all Aerostar
kites will use the premium Icarex PC-31 fabric. This means all
Stryke Fighters ordered with custom colors will now have the PC-31
polyester sailcloth instead of last year's Toray or P-31.
Strength wise, the PC-31 fabric is overkill for a fighter. But,
it does have the required light weight so critical for a kite that
weighs <1/2 oz (not to mention that beautiful glow when held up
to the light!) Another benefit is that Aerostar
dual-line kite owners can now pick out exact color matches for their
custom Strykes if so desired.
3. On-line
color modeling for the Stryke Fighter is now here! CLICK
HERE to check it out. Both the new curved Tri-Panel and Appliquéd
designs are featured. (To simulate a solid panel Stryke,
simply fill in all panels with the same color.)
4.
A new page was added called Tuning
Tips. Here you will find a list of pointers to
help you achieve maximum performance from your Aerostar
kite.
5. The Stryke
Fighter page was updated to include a picture of each of the five
available sail options. Keep in mind that these photos are for
reference only. As with all Aerostar kites, you get to choose
your own colors at no extra charge!
6. On-line
color modeling for the new ZeroStar SUL is here! The unique
sail graphics of this kite provide the foundation for some stunning
color combos, so have fun and be creative! Ready to create
your masterpiece? Then CLICK
HERE.
7. A new Flying Tips article was
added that covers Advanced Axels. Enjoy!
8.
There has been a lot of new customers since this web page started
in late July and I thank you all. (A special thanks goes out
to Joe Ludwig - I couldn't have
gotten this far without you!) Also, I am very proud to relay
that approximately 90% of Aerostar customers have returned to buy
additional kites. Your loyalty and support is very
much appreciated! 9.
A special Rainbow version of the new ZeroStar SUL will now be
available! Due to the high cost of this distinctive sailcloth
and the extra layout time involved, this be a $25.00 option.
Photographs of the first Rainbow ZeroStar will be up soon. For now,
here is a little teaser:
10.
The templates for the new Tri-Panel Stryke Fighters have been
fabricated. They look fantastic and the first kites with the
"curved" seams can now be started. (To those that
have had these fighters on order, thanks for your patience - good
things come to those who wait!) Here is a photo of
the new templates:
11.
Some photos of the new Rainbow ZeroStar SUL are now
on-line. CLICK
HERE to see a still photo along with the other ZeroStars made
thus far. Some action shots of this stunning kite are also on
the Photos Page.
12. Some photos
of the new Tri-Panel fighters are now on the Stryke
Page.
